Specialist treatment for more complex gum issues
At Ethicare Dental, we are proud to have a consultant specialist periodontist, Dr Steve Bassi, able to deal with the gum problems that require more in depth care. Severe gum problems that do not respond to normal or deep cleaning are best treated by a periodontist. They can carry out procedures to improve access for cleaning or even procedures to allow the bone which has been lost to grow back in certain instances.
If your gums have suffered severe recession, a periodontist can carry out procedures to graft gum back in the area. Please ask your dentist to refer you or phone to make an appointment with Dr Bassi for a consultation if you feel that you fall into these categories.

If you have severe gum disease that cannot be controlled by brushing and flossing alone, you will need to see a periodontist for specialist maintenance and care. They are highly trained and experienced, and use advanced equipment and methods to manage the condition and allow you to keep your natural teeth for longer.
If milder gum disease, known as gingivitis, is allowed to progress, it leads to receding gums and pockets forming between the gum and tooth. These can fill with harmful plaque and bacteria, causing further damage. If left untreated, your teeth begin to lose support from the bone and become loose, eventually falling out. A periodontist can give you more detailed advice than your regular dentist on the management of the disease.
Prospective patients are required to read and understand the post operative instructions and consent form for periodontal surgery prior to treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
The problem is that there is little way of knowing which patients are going to suffer from periodontitis, which is a far more destructive condition than gingivitis. There is a genetic susceptibility to periodontitis. Therefore we tend to treat both gingivitis and periodontitis at their root cause – the presence of bacteria. If the bacterial levels are kept low, we can exert control over both issues.
At Ethicare Dental we have a well defined protocol for dealing with varying severities of periodontal disease which will involve sessions with one of our hygienists and may involve treatment with our periodontal specialist.
We do all we can to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable during treatment, including using local anaesthetic to numb the treatment area. You will likely feel some discomfort during periodontal treatment, particularly if we are cleaning below the gumline, but this is temporary and most patients find it not as bad as they were expecting.
If you choose not to have periodontal treatment, it is very likely that you will lose your natural teeth, as the bone supporting them continues to be worn away. This comes with further complications and costs, as you will need to be fitted with a restoration such as implants, dentures or a dental bridge.
