How long does it take?
An upper wisdom tooth can take less time than a filling. A lower or impacted tooth takes longer and may need a small cut in the gum. Healing takes a week or two.
Only when it needs to come out.
Not every wisdom tooth needs removing. The reasons that justify it are recurrent pain and infection, decay in the wisdom tooth or the tooth beside it, and bone loss around the wisdom tooth that is putting its neighbour at risk. We assess yours at your examination or emergency appointment and tell you honestly whether it should stay or go.
Upper wisdom teeth are often quick. Lower teeth can be harder to reach, and a tooth that is impacted or partly buried in the gum is a job for Dr Yvonne Szyszko, who removes the wisdom teeth most practitioners would find challenging, faster and more comfortably, and with IV sedation for nervous patients or longer procedures.

- 02Your consentWe explain the procedure, the risks and the alternatives, and you read and sign the consent form for extraction before treatment.

Does it have to come out?
A wisdom tooth that is not causing problems can usually be left and kept clean. If the tooth next to it is the one that is decayed, treating that tooth may be the answer. Where removal is the right call, you can choose local anaesthetic alone or IV sedation with Dr Yvonne.

Is it painful to have a wisdom tooth removed?
You should not feel pain during the removal: the area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and IV sedation is available with Dr Yvonne for nervous patients. Some pain and swelling afterwards is normal and settles over a few days with painkillers.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. A wisdom tooth is removed when it causes recurrent pain or infection, is decayed, or is damaging the tooth beside it. One that is not causing problems is usually left alone and checked at your examinations.
