Can I pay monthly?
Yes. Two hygiene visits a year are included in every adult Denplan plan, from £24.82 a month, and four in Plan C.
How long does it take?
Between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on the appointment your dentist prescribes. Most regular patients need the 30-minute Essentials appointment.
Healthy gums keep your teeth.
Gum disease is the main reason adults lose teeth, and it is almost always preventable. Sylwia monitors the condition of your gums at every visit, removes the tartar that brushing cannot reach with an ultrasonic scaler, and uses local anaesthetic if you need it. Stubborn staining can be lifted gently with Airflow, a fine jet of air, water and bicarbonate.
Every appointment follows a prescription from your dentist, so the time and the technique are matched to your mouth rather than a one-size clean. You leave with oral hygiene and dietary advice that is actually about you.

- 01Gum checkSylwia charts the condition of your gums and looks for bleeding, inflammation or recession.
- 02ScalingTartar is removed from the hard-to-reach areas with an ultrasonic scaler and by hand, with local anaesthetic if you would like it.

Which hygiene appointment do I need?
Your dentist prescribes the right one. Essentials suits regular patients who do not build up much tartar. Essentials Plus adds time for sensitive teeth. Is a hygiene appointment painful?
You may feel some discomfort from the ultrasonic scaler, and we use local anaesthetic to minimise it if you would like. Airflow stain removal is pain-free: it uses a jet of compressed air, water and bicarbonate particles.
How often do I need to see the hygienist?
We tell you the right interval for you, which usually falls in step with your dental examinations. Some patients are advised to come more often, some less.
Will my teeth be whiter after a hygiene appointment?
A hygiene appointment does not whiten teeth, but they often look brighter once plaque, tartar and surface staining have gone. If you would like your teeth whiter, ask us about home whitening.
Can I see the hygienist without seeing a dentist first?
Our hygienist works to a prescription from your dentist, so a dental examination comes first. If you see another dentist for your check-ups, ask them for a prescription and we will happily see you.
How much is a hygiene appointment at Ethicare?
Adult appointments run from £105 for 30 minutes to £215 for an hour with Airflow. Children's appointments are £70. Every hygiene fee is on our fees page.
