Two kinds of bridge, honestly compared.
A resin-bonded bridge is the least destructive design: the false tooth is bonded to the back of a neighbouring tooth with almost no drilling. It suits front teeth, either permanently or while an implant heals, but it can come away under the heavier forces at the back of the mouth.
A fixed bridge is far more likely to stay put, but the teeth either side have to be crowned, which means removing a layer of healthy enamel and, sometimes, root canal treatment on those teeth later. That is why, where the neighbouring teeth are sound, we usually suggest an implant first: it stands on its own and leaves them untouched.

Bridge, implant or denture?
An implant is usually the preferred option because it does not touch the neighbouring teeth and helps preserve the bone. A bridge suits patients who cannot or do not want to have an implant, and a resin-bonded bridge is a good, inexpensive choice at the front. Where several teeth are missing, a denture becomes an option.

Are there alternatives to a dental bridge?
Yes: an implant or a partial denture. Implants are stronger, more stable and leave the neighbouring teeth untouched, which is why fewer bridges are placed today, but in some cases a bridge is still the better choice and we will say so.
What are dental bridges made of?
Usually porcelain or ceramic for their appearance and durability, sometimes bonded to a metal base for strength. Modern all-ceramic bridges are stronger than ever and look very natural.
How long will my bridge last?
Looked after properly, with healthy teeth and gums around it, a bridge should last over ten years.
How do I look after my bridge?
Brush twice a day and clean under and around the bridge every day with floss threaders or interdental brushes. Your dentist checks the bridge at each examination and can catch problems early.
