Strong, protective restorations for damaged teeth
Crowns provide a strong and effective cover for unsightly teeth, fitting over the whole tooth to both protect it and enhance the appearance of your smile. They are essential in many situations and are colour matched to your natural teeth to create a seamless finish.
Porcelain crowns are popular for their beautifully realistic and aesthetic qualities, and are the most commonly fitted crown at Ethicare Dental. We use the Procera, Empress and Emax systems to create incredibly lifelike restorations. We can also use gold crowns in less visible areas. These are strong and less destructive to the tooth but not as aesthetically pleasing.

At your initial appointment, we examine your teeth and make sure you are suitable for a crown. We check your mouth is healthy, with no signs of infection present.
We prepare your affected tooth for treatment, removing a layer of the structure but leaving a strong core to accommodate the crown. This stage shouldn’t be painful, and we use local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort.
We take impressions of your teeth so your crown can be made to fit perfectly. We place a temporary crown to protect your prepared tooth before your next appointment.
When your final crown is ready, we make sure it fits accurately and comfortably, and you are happy with it, before securing it into place using a strong dental adhesive.

If teeth are missing, one of the options available is bridgework. Maryland bridges involve minimal removal of tooth structure, other types of bridgework do involve more destructive removal of tooth structure.
Yes, the best thing to do is to treat your crown just like your natural teeth. Brush and floss twice a day as part of your normal daily oral hygiene routine to keep your teeth and gums healthy and problem-free.
At Ethicare Dental, we use the Emax, Procera and Empress ceramic systems. Advances in cosmetic dentistry mean the quality of the ceramic used is superb and can be used to create consistent and beautiful natural looking results.
Sometimes prior to having crowns it may be necessary to alter the position of the gum so that the best cosmetic result can be achieved. This can be done by grafting gum (gingival grafting) onto a site where the gum has severely receded. The opposite to this can be carried out if the gum around the teeth is irregular or there are short, worn teeth remaining or if the patient has a very gummy smile (crown lengthening procedure). Our periodontal specialist Dr Steve Bassi would carry out these procedures prior to preparation for cosmetic veneers or crowns.
Yes, at your initial consultation we take the time to discuss the ideal shade for your crown. Your dentist will carefully record the shade of your natural teeth so your crown will blend seamlessly into your smile for a beautifully aesthetic result.
