Dental examinations are an important part of your oral care, helping us spot and fix any problems early before they become more serious issues. All new patients registering at the practice will have a thorough examination, so we can get to know you and your teeth.
In order to register with our practice all you need to do is book yourself in for a check-up or emergency appointment and fill out an appropriate new patient registration form.
Your dental examination will be carried out by Dr Glafcos. A thorough examination is provided in order to properly evaluate the extent of any problems in your mouth. A broken tooth or filling can be easily repaired, but is there an underlying cause and what can we do to prevent similar problems in the future?
Initially, we ask you some questions about your oral and general health history and how you are feeling now. We also discuss your cosmetic concerns and if there is anything you would like to improve about the appearance of your smile.
We carry out your clinical assessment, carefully examining your teeth, gums and bite. We also assess the soft tissues in your mouth, checking they are healthy and looking for any signs of oral cancer. If any treatment is required, we form your treatment plan.
Examinations should only be carried out when needed. This does not necessarily mean every 6 months, as the condition of your teeth and gums may require more or less frequent visits. We will let you know when to book your next examination at the end of your appointment.
There are often a series of options when it comes to a treatment plan. You should always be given an estimate so you understand from the outset the likely overall financial and clinical implications. With the best will in the world, not every circumstance can be predicted and especially for complex plans, there may be changes to the treatment plan on the way.
Yes, if you require further treatment following your dental examination, there are ways you can spread the cost. Our payment options include paying for treatment as you progress or you can choose our 0% or low finance plan to help make treatment more affordable.
X-rays should only be taken when needed and when the benefit is likely to outweigh the risk. Dentists should adhere to guidelines as to how frequently X-rays should be taken. For instance, bitewing X-rays which can show decay between the teeth are recommended every 2 years on average. However this depends on the age of the patient as well as their past history. Often a lengthier interval between X-rays can be justified.
It is our practice policy to avoid taking X-rays on pregnant ladies, though again this must be assessed on a case by case basis. Since we have the facility of using digital X-rays the radiation dose to the patient is far lower.
